Newcastle United have not won a Premier League game since October and have lost their last two.

In comments reported by the Chronicle, Mikel Merino has, perhaps surprisingly, suggested that Newcastle have a squad that is perfect for the Premier League – despite their recent form sending them towards the relegation zone.

Rafa Benitez’s men’s defeat to Leicester at St James’ Park on Saturday has left the Magpies without a win in their last seven top flight games, while they have only managed to take one point during that time.

Their form has left them just two points and two places above the relegation zone, and with none of the bottom three losing at the weekend – two of the sides won – it appears that Benitez’s side may need to turn their fortunes around soon if they do not want to drop into the relegation zone.

But despite their recent form, Merino has suggested that Newcastle’s squad, as it is, is more than good enough to do well at the highest level.

“Our squad is perfect for Premier League. All the players here are capable. I believe in each one and that this team is a great team,” he said, as reported by the Chronicle.

“We know we have lost again, and we are not going through a good period, but we have to make sure we don’t lose our minds.”

It would be no surprise if a large portion of Newcastle fans were not as convinced about the squad as the summer signing appears to be, and they will certainly be hoping that Benitez is allowed to be extremely busy during the January transfer window as he looks to bolster their options.
