Rafa Benitez has chosen two from his three talented midfield options so far this season, but the trio started together for Newcastle on Sunday.

It has been the question on Newcastle United fans’ lips since Mikel Merino broke into the side: can he play with Jonjo Shelvey?

Against Liverpool, the pair proved that they can work together, anchoring the midfield in a strong display that saw Shelvey assist Newcastle’s equaliser.

But at Southampton on Sunday, Merino was out the team and Isaac Hayden – another fine young talent – returned alongside England international Shelvey.

Rafa Benitez’s big call paid off – just days after Merino signed a permanent contract – as the Magpies shone and Hayden scored the opener in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Perhaps most encouraging of all for Newcastle supporters, though, was Merino’s emergence from the bench to feature alongside both Hayden and Shelvey.

The Spain Under-21 international came on in place of Ayoze Perez 27 minutes from time and, although Southampton then netted a leveller from the penalty spot, Newcastle retained a great balance in midfield.

Even with Dwight Gayle hobbling towards the end of the game, Shelvey played well in an advanced position as he pushed forward and looked to run beyond the Magpies’ static striker.

While Perez will expect to keep his place against Crystal Palace next week, Benitez at least has food for thought having seen Merino, Hayden and Shelvey in action together.

It is a system that could work and, given their various qualities, may well prove to be Newcastle’s best midfield option.
