Mikel Merino has suggested that the Newcastle fans were incredible during the Magpies’ draw with Liverpool at the weekend, but added that that came as little surprise to him, the Shields Gazette reports.

Rafa Benitez’s men secured ninth spot in the Premier League heading into the international break as they came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with the Reds at St James’ Park.

Unsurprisingly, there is plenty of positivity around Newcastle at the moment as the early signs suggest that they will have no problem re-establishing themselves in the top flight if they continue to perform as they have done so far.

And Merino suggested that the supporters have played a key role in their performance so far this term, with the Spaniard heaping praise on the crowd’s performance during the game against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“The crowd was incredible,” he said, as reported by the Shields Gazette. “I’m used to it, so I’m not surprised, because every time we play at home the crowd is at an incredible level.

“It helps us a lot, and the team’s really, really happy about that. What we want to do is to keep the mood and to keep the crowd going like this.”

Not only will the atmosphere the fans create have a major impact on the side’s performances on the pitch, it will surely also have a positive effect as Benitez tries to attract potential targets to the club.

It is difficult not to be hugely impressed by Newcastle at the moment, and the fans are part of the reason for that, and that should surely make landing their transfer targets a much easier job as long as things continue to go well.
