Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has used the example of Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero to defend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as quoted in The Guardian.
Aubameyang scored against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday to help Arsenal to a win in Austria.
It was the 31-year-old striker’s first goal for the Gunners in a competitive match since the opening game against Fulham.
The Gabon international had been struggling for goals until Thursday, and Arteta has defended him.
The Arsenal boss has explained why Aubameyang has not been scoring, and has used the example of Aguero, who is a star player for Pep Guardiola’s side, to make his point.
The Guardian quotes Arteta as saying about Aubameyang: “He needs to get in more goalscoring opportunities, he needs to get the ball more around the box in order to do what he is able to do.
“[Rapid Vienna] was a different game to some of the games we have played against big teams this season. It is the same for him or [Sergio] Aguero, who didn’t have a shot on target as well at the weekend. It’s not an isolation of just our player.”
Arsenal need Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in top form
Aubameyang is arguably the best player on the books of Arsenal, and the North London club need him to be on top of his game to achieve their goals this season.
The Gunners are aiming to finish in the Champions League places in the Premier League table and also make an impact in the Europa League this season.
According to WhoScored, the 31-year-old striker scored 22 goals and provided three assists in the Premier League last season, while in 2018-19, he scored 22 goals and gave five assists in the league.
