Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has responded when asked about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s performance against Aston Villa last night, as quoted in Football.London.

The Gunners suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Villa at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

It was a very disappointing performance from the North London outfit, as the Villans were the better team over the course of the 90 minutes and deservedly picked up all three points from the encounter.

Aubameyang started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, and his performance was from impressive.

According to WhoScored, the 31-year-old Gabon international striker did not have a single shot (on or off target).

When pointed out that Aubameyang did not have a single shot on target against Villa, Arteta told Football.London: “Yeah but that’s a team function and that’s a collective thing that we have to do more. Certainly in some situations the end product is something that we need to improve.

“About his position and his movement and where we can find him of course we can talk about if it’s the right or wrong place for him but when things working and he was scoring that debate wasn’t there.

“What is certain is that with these numbers and scoring these amount of goals it’s impossible to be fighting with the top teams.

“We have to maintain the numbers that we have defensively and for sure we have to improve our numbers attacking wise if we want to challenge there and be consistent winning football matches for sure.”

Need to improve

Aubameyang is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and is a key figure at Arsenal, but he has been in disappointing form so far this season.

According to WhoScored, the former Borussia Dortmund star has scored just two goals and provided one assist in eight Premier League games for the Gunners so far this season.

It is clear that Aubameyang needs to score more goals for Arsenal to win matches on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a hat-trick for AS Roma on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Armenia international, who left the Gunners on a permanent basis in the summer of 2020, scored all three goals in Roma’s 3-1 win against Genoa in Serie A.
