Arteta made the comments about Martinez ahead of the Premier League game against Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium in North London on Tuesday evening.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper will start for the Gunners with Bernd Leno injured, just as the Argentine has been doing recently.
Arsenal boss Arteta has praised the attitude that goalkeeper has shown, and he has urged him to show consistency.
Arteta told Football.London about Martinez showing determination to make the number one spot his own: “That’s what he’s been trying to do for a long period now at the club. As I said before, his preparation, his attitude has been spot on.
“He’s been very respectful, very patient and now that he has the opportunity, he’s grabbing it.
“At this level, it’s not about two, three, eight or 10 games, it’s about the consistency over a lot of games and that’s what he needs to prove now.”
Future at Arsenal?
Martinez has done well in the games in which he has played for Arsenal this season, and perhaps he does have a future at the Gunners after all.
The 27-year-old has been on the books of the North London outfit since 2010, but he has played only a handful of matches for the first team.
The goalkeeper has been out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers among other clubs, but this is the big chance he has got to step up and stake a claim in the starting lineup for next season.
