Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has told iNews that he thinks this is Nicolas Pepe’s big opportunity to redeem himself.
The Ivorian winger was sent off against Leeds United last month, as he headbutted Ezgjan Alioski to leave his side in the lurch at Elland Road.
Arsenal did pick up a point in a 0-0 draw, but Pepe’s petulance and temper were slammed as he wasted a chance to nail down a starting role.
He has though impressed in the Europa League since then, as he starred against Molde before picking up an assist against Dundalk last week.
His Premier League suspension has come to an end, meaning he is available for Arteta to select against Southampton this evening – and he may just need him.
Arsenal have scored just twice in their last eight Premier League games, and they came from a penalty and a header from a free kick, with Arteta’s men struggling from open play.

Arteta has dropped a hint that Pepe will start tonight having suggested that this is the 25-year-old’s big chance to make up for his red card and show what he’s all about.
Arteta didn’t want to put too much pressure on an individual, but feels this is a chance for a ‘big player’ to help Arsenal through a difficult moment, a clear hint that Pepe will be brought back into the side as the Gunners chase creativity.
“Yes,” said Arteta, when asked if Pepe can now stand up and take his chance. “I think difficult moments or big moments require big players, and when that happens we will expect the big players to do something about it. But as well, not rely just on individuals, it’s not something that I like when we are having a difficult moment,” he added.
