Newcastle United are reportedly not looking to appoint one of the old guard to replace Rafael Benitez.

Coach of Manchester City, Mikel Arteta looks on during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Chelsea at Etihad Stadium on March 4, 2018 in Manchester, England.

According to a report in the Telegraph, Newcastle United do not want to appoint ‘one of the usual suspects’ to replace Rafael Benitez.

Newcastle have already been linked with the likes of Steve Bruce and David Moyes since Benitez left St. James’ Park on Monday.

However, Newcastle do not want to go with the ‘safe option’, and could well take a chance on a more exciting boss, who is less proven.

That gives Mikel Arteta a real chance of landing his first job in management at Newcastle.

Arteta is regarded as one of the brightest coaches in football, after his work at Manchester City.

The Spaniard is yet to step into the world of management, but if Newcastle are looking to take a gamble, then Arteta would fit the mould.

Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta talks to Fernandinho during a Manchester City training session at Manchester City Football Academy on November 26, 2018 in Manchester, England.

The former Arsenal and Everton player is said to be keen on the Magpies job by the Daily Star, and he is believed to be eager to take his opportunity to manage the Magpies.

The Sun have also claimed that Arteta would be a popular appointment with Newcastle’s Spanish speaking players.

And Newcastle’s criteria of what they are looking for while searching for Benitez’s replacement suggests that Arteta has a real chance of landing the job.
