Mikel Arteta has another selection dilemma to think about ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League match against Athletic Club.
Arsenal head into the tie in good form, having just seen off Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the Emirates. Martin Zubimendi scored twice, and Viktor Gyokeres found the net again, continuing his strong run in front of goal.
While there was plenty for the Spanish coach to be happy about, one issue did stand out for the Gunners during the win.
Martin Odegaard’s shoulder problem returned, and he had to leave the pitch early in the first half. It is something that has troubled him before this season, so it was not a complete surprise.
If Odegaard is not fit in time for Athletic Club, there is an obvious choice who can step in.
Ethan Nwaneri is the clear choice to step in for Martin Odegaard against Athletic Club

The Norwegian midfielder’s injury is now a growing concern, raising doubts about his recovery for the rapid transition from the Premier League to the Champions League.
The start of the European league stage sees Arsenal taking on Athletic Club, a challenging fixture that could shape their early momentum.
There may be several options available, but it is increasingly clear that Ethan Nwaneri is the right pick to fill in for Odegaard.
The 18-year-old came off the bench to replace his captain and made an immediate impact with his composure and vision in possession.
Others may have found the net, but it was Nwaneri who helped control play higher up the pitch, showing good awareness and intelligence without looking rushed or out of place.
Nwaneri managed 47 touches in 70 minutes while maintaining solid passing numbers and even creating a key chance. Although none of his three shots found their mark – two missed and one blocked – it was still a positive step forward as he settles into a bigger midfield role.
Nwaneri had some strong performances during last season’s European campaign too, often finding space and getting more involved as matches opened up late on.
The meeting with Athletic Club could offer him another opportunity to build confidence early in this season’s run if he gets the start again.

Arsenal’s alternatives to Martin Odegaard beyond Ethan Nwaneri
Nwaneri is expected to take on the number ten position, though Arsenal possess alternative players who could be utilized.
Eberechi Eze could slide into that spot, which would allow either Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard to take over on the left wing.
Max Dowman is another possibility. He has come off the bench twice in the league and could be given his first start.
There is also a chance Arteta reshuffles the midfield, as he did in the loss to Liverpool. That setup saw Declan Rice play alongside Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi.
The Spaniard has options, but this fixture feels like an ideal opportunity for Nwaneri to stake his claim in midfield.
