Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has told Football.London what he has said to Matteo Guendouzi about his future.

Guendouzi was left out of the Arsenal team for the final weeks of the season after falling out with Arteta, as reported by The Sun.

The report in the British tabloid has claimed that the French midfielder was not even allowed to train with the first-team squad.

Arteta has said that ahead of the new season, he has given all of his players a clean slate, including Guendouzi.

Arteta told Football.London: “I have been really clear that everybody starts from zero all the time in football. What you did two weeks ago or two years ago doesn’t really matter.

“It’s what you are able to contribute to the team now. Everybody is going to have the same opportunities. They’ll have to show with their performances and their attitude that they are better than their teammates or somehow contributing to what we want to achieve this season.”

The Arsenal boss added regarding what he has told Guendouzi: ”To tell him exactly that he’s going to be part of the team and at the moment he’s like any other player in our squad. He deserves first of all to be treated exactly the same and I will do that to my best capability.”

Future at Arsenal after all?

Guendouzi has been linked with moves away from Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

According to a report in Foot Mercato earlier this month, Villarreal manager Unai Emery wants to sign the young midfielder from his former club Arsenal (click here to read more).

The Times reported this month that the Gunners want £40 million for the 21-year-old, with the North London club having paid Lorient £8 million to sign him in the summer of 2018, according to Sky Sports.

However, Arteta’s comments suggest that Guendouzi does have a future at Arsenal after all.

One suspects that it will now be up to the Frenchman to show in pre-season and in the opening weeks of the season that he can be an important player for Arsenal.
