Paul Dummett has started every one of Newcastle United’s Premier League games since Steve Bruce took over from Rafa Benitez at St James’ Park.

Mike Williamson believes Paul Dummett has proved his doubters wrong at Newcastle United with the defender enjoying a fine start to the Premier League season, as reported by The Chronicle.
Dummett might be one of the few academy graduates who have established themselves in The Magpies’ first team over the last decade, making over 150 appearances in all competitions, but the Welshman remains an easy target for the critics.
Then again, there’s a reason why Dummett has been a key player under Alan Pardew, Steve McClaren, Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce, starting all of Newcastle’s six Premier League games so far in 2019/20.
The 27-year-old might not be the most glamorous or technically gifted player in Bruce’s squad but his commitment to the cause has never been questioned.
On his day, Dummett is capable of matching almost any defender in the top flight as Tottenham, who failed to find a way past the impenetrable six footer at St James’ Park in August, will no doubt attest.
And Williamson, who played alongside Dummett during his formative years under Pardew, believes the critics don’t have a leg to stand on these days.

“Dummy, the style of player he is, has always been that kind of unsung hero. I don’t think some people saw the value he brought to the team,” said the current Gateshead manager.
“I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed playing with him, he knows what he’s about and he does what he’s strong at and he does it well.
“Whenever you need a result and characters with honesty and desire, he will be the first one on the teamsheet.”
Dummett has often played as a left-back down the years but he is far more effective in a back three, where his excellent positional sense and reading of the game can be put to good use. Bruce is getting the best out of him, which certainly can’t be said of every Newcastle player.
