AC Milan star Mike Maignan has been dubbed a ‘£200 million’ goalkeeper amid claims that Tottenham Hotspur hope to take the France international to the Premier League this summer.

With Hugo Lloris now retired from international duty, Maignan is finally – some would say ‘belatedly’ – stepping into his Les Bleus shoes.

And, with Tottenham preparing for life without the 36-year-old World Cup winner, AC Milan’s former Lille stopper is likely to be a leading candidate to take Lloris’ place at club level too. Football London believe that Maignan is high on Spurs’ goalkeeping wishlist, alongside Brighton’s Robert Sanchez and Valencia’s criminally-underrated Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Maignan, a Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2021, helped end Milan’s ten-year Scudetto drought last season too. Few imagined that the Rossoneri would succeed in replacing – yet alone upgrading – Gigi Donnarumma following his acrimonious departure. But Maignan has done exactly that.

In fact, there may not be a finer shot-stopper anywhere in European football on current form.

Tottenham Hotspur like AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan

“Maignan is a devastating phenomenon,” former Italy ace Cristian Vieri tells Twitch, ‘Magic Mike’ Maignan proving his worth again with a virtuoso display during Milan’s 1-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg victory away at Napoli.

“When you’re in the stadium, you think he’ll never concede. (Milan paid) 15 million? He’s worth 200 million. He’s a champion.

“I put him with the great champions of the history of football. If he hadn’t been injured, Milan would have had ten or 12 points more (this season).”

Tottenham were handed a front-row seat to witness Maignan’s Barry Allen-esque, almost superhuman reflexes recently. The 27-year-old denied Harry Kane from point-blank range during the dying seconds of March’s UCL last-16 tie.

Another big save at a big moment from Milan’s big man.

“For me, this goalkeeper, is just outstanding,” France legend Thierry Henry tells CBS Sport. “I have been saying that for a very long time. He was at the academy of Paris Saint-Germain. They didn’t want to keep him.

“He is an outstanding goalkeeper. If it wasn’t for Mike Maignan, then it might have been a 1-1 game (against Napoli). If that game was 1-1, the no-one could have said that it wasn’t right.”
