Mike Grella has told Leeds United fans that his old club are getting a “top” manager in Jesse Marsch – amid reports the American has agreed to move to Elland Road. It comes after Marcelo Bielsa was sacked on Sunday.
Bielsa, 66, had picked up one point from the club’s last five Premier League matches and in the mean time – conceded 20 goals. The club’s board decided that after four years of Bielsa, it was time for a change. He has left.
Fabrizio Romano reports, among others, that 48-year-old Marsch is set to come in. The American is without a club since leaving Leipzig after a disappointing spell, but worked wonders at RedBull Salzburg beforehand.
Amid the reports that Marsch could be on his way to Leeds, ex-Whites attacker Grella told fans what they can expect. Grella worked under Marsch during the his time at New York Red Bulls, between 2015 and 2018.
Grella on Marsch: Can Leeds fans be excited, after Bielsa exit?
For the last four years, Leeds fans have not had to worry about their manager. He has become an icon for Leeds, taking over the club after a very dark time in which it had taken 16 years to return to the top flight.
His connection with fans, his humble approach to life, his work with the club’s charities and youth academies – it has convinced many that he is the best manager the club has had since Don Revie, or Howard Wilkinson.
But with Marsch, Leeds fans can be excited. Perhaps a slightly more pragmatic approach will be adopted, but a young, exciting gaffer that has similar ideology to Bielsa. Leeds fans will be sad, but can get excited too.
