Mike Brown did not take the bait when asked about Donald Trump attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.
The New York Knicks head coach has enough to manage with his team leading the San Antonio Spurs 2-0. A presidential visit adds noise, but Brown made it clear that his attention is staying on basketball.
That response said plenty without turning the question into a political debate.

Mike Brown keeps New York Knicks focus away from Donald Trump Game 3 debate
Mike Brown spoke pre-game when asked about Donald Trump attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.
“I’m just locked in on Game 3… people text me all the time. My focus is what’s next [and] I feel our group’s that way too,” Brown said.
Brown’s answer avoided the question of whether Trump’s attendance is appropriate. Instead, he treated it like another outside storyline that cannot be allowed to enter the locker room.
That is exactly the tone the Knicks need. New York is two wins from its first championship since 1973, and letting the night become about anything other than the Spurs would be a mistake.
Donald Trump’s Game 3 visit creates distraction risk for New York Knicks
Trump is expected to attend Game 3 on Monday, June 8, with tip-off set for 8:30 p.m. ET. His visit has already brought extra security, a no-bag policy, early arrival warnings, and the cancellation of the outdoor watch party near Madison Square Garden.
That kind of setup can affect everyone around the game. Fans have to plan differently, arena staff face heavier restrictions, and players know the building will carry a different kind of attention.
Stephen A. Smith has warned that the visit could disrupt the atmosphere, while Adam Silver has framed it as another New Yorker joining the Knicks’ Finals excitement.
Brown’s job is to keep the Knicks away from that argument. If his team handles Game 3, the Trump storyline becomes background noise. If New York looks distracted, it will be remembered as part of the night.
