Celtic defender Mikael Lustig was certainly the hero for his country last night, as his goal saw Sweden scrape by against European minnows Luxembourg.
Sweden were the strong favourites to win the game at the Stade Josy Barthel but Luxembourg side put in a very strong defensive performance against Sweden, holding out until the hour mark in a game they only lost 1-0 – even after going down to ten men.
Celtic right-back Lustig ended up being the hero for his country with a rare goal.
Celtic’s Mikael Lustig celebrates at the end of the game
He hit a snapshot half volley from inside the box after the hosts failed to clear a corner, a goal which proved to be the winner for a humble Swedish side.
The 29-year-old right-back took his goal brilliantly, his fourth for his country.
Celtic know their experienced defender can be a threat from set-pieces because of his height and he did score in the Champions League qualifier against Lincoln Red Imps earlier this season.
Celtic fans will of course hope he focuses on keeping goals out for Celtic in the weeks to come. But if he can also score a few, nobody will complain.
