Rangers take on Villarreal in the Europa League on Thursday.

Villarreal defender Miguel Layun has admitted to The Scottish Sun that he will be speaking to Eduardo Herrera and Carlos Pena about Rangers.

The Gers beat Dundee 4-0 on Saturday afternoon, but there is little rest for Steven Gerrard’s side as they travel to Spain on Thursday to begin their Europa League group stage campaign.

After battling through Shkupi, Osijek, Maribor and Ufa to get to the group stage, Rangers kick off their group stage campaign against Villarreal on Thursday, facing a tricky trip to El Madrigal.

Javier Calleja’s side finished fifth in La Liga last season and will be expecting a strong campaign, boasting the likes of Santi Cazorla, Pablo Fornals and Carlos Bacca in their side.

Another key player is full back Miguel Layun, and the 30-year-old – signed from Porto this summer – may be able to get some information to help Calleja’s cause.

In 2017, Rangers allowed Pedro Caixinha to bring in Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera, two Mexican internationals who proved to be major flops and have already returned to their homeland on loan.

Layun knows the pair from international duty with Mexico, and has told The Scottish Sun that he will be speaking to both of them for information and advice about Gerrard’s Rangers.

“I know Rangers had a couple of Mexican players in their team last season — Eduardo Herrera and Carlos Pena,” said Layun. “Before Thursday’s game I will call them and ask about the team. They will be able to tell me about what the club is like even though Rangers have changed quite a few players recently,” he added.
