This Newcastle United takeover is swiftly turning into something of a saga.
It’s been nearly two months since Saudi Public Investment Fund agreed a £300 million deal with Mike Ashley for the sale of the Magpies.
But the Premier League has been conducting a rigourous background check following allegations of broadcast piracy that have been levelled against Saudi PIF.
Consequently, there have been several delays and it remains to be seen when – and if – the Premier League will greenlight the takeover, though it’s been reported that the buying and selling parties remain confident.
And according to The Independent, a decision could be made in mid-June.
Miguel Delaney of The Independent has written that at some point over the next fortnight there could be clarity, but has added that the ‘takeover is still unlikely to be settled for some time’ in reference to the blowback of a potential approval of the bid.
There is strong opposition of this deal being ratified – including from BeIN Sport – and even if the Premier League agrees the Newcastle sale, the saga could continue.
