The Atlanta United midfielder is widely expected to be closing in on a move to the Magpies.
Newcastle United fans have endured a frustrating January on the transfer front but the signs are there suggesting that one of the month’s top transfer targets could soon become a reality.
According to Sky Sports News, Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron is set to join the Magpies for a club-record £20 million fee, a move which could potentially have big repercussions of the positive kind in terms of not only fan morale and on-pitch improvements but also Rafael Benitez’s future.
According to the Daily Mail, the Spaniard – whose deal at Newcastle runs until the end of the season – had a “shackle clause” in his contract that means he would have reportedly had to pay £6million if he quit, but this has now apparently expired.
When asked by the Daily Mail ahead of Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Manchester City if he would resign should the club have not signed any players by the closure of the window, the 58-year-old said: “We will wait until Thursday and see what happens.”
Over in the United States, journalist Roberto Rojas posted a Twitter photo of Paraguay international Almiron and his agent Daniel Campos at the airport, apparently jetting off to England:
If Almiron does, as widely expected, join Newcastle, could this prove the catalyst for Benitez to stay at St James’ Park at the very least until the end of the season, and potentially beyond?
After all, the Toon Army adores Benitez, a feeling which is very much reciprocated, so this is one space that should definitely be watched.
