The Newcastle United star seemingly turned down Arsenal.
The agent of Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron has revealed that his client turned down a move to Arsenal and Southampton in favour of joining the Magpies.
Newcastle broke their all-time record transfer fee in January by signing the former Atlanta FC playmaker for £20 million [The Sun].
The Paraguay international has already looked like a cracking signing and dazzled on his full debut in the win over Huddersfield Town last weekend.
Almiron tore it up in the MLS last season, prompting a number of European sides to take an interest.
Arsenal and the Saints offered him the chance to join on loan, but his representative, Daniel Campos, claims that a permanent move to St James’s Park was preferable.
“Miguel Almiron is a footballer who went from less to more, now he is a more complete footballer,” he told radio station ABC Cardinal.
“There was interest shown by Manchester United in Miguel Almiron but they never made an offer.
“Arsenal and Southampton offered loan deals for Miguel Almiron but we did not want it to be a loan.”
Arsenal are a bigger club than Newcastle and even though the terms of the deal were better in the North East, fans of the Tyneside club must be floored by the commitment nonetheless.
Turning down the Gunners under any circumstance is a big call and one that, from a Newcastle perspective, hopefully won’t backfire.
Rafael Benitez’s side host Burnley tonight and Almiron is expected to remain in the first XI.
