‘Might freeze’: Sky pundit now fears Crystal Palace player could be a risk for England

Former Premier League defender Danny Mills has suggested that England starting Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi or Chelsea’s Levi Colwill could be risky.

England take on Ukraine in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Saturday and Mills, who was speaking on Sky Sports News (06/09/2023 at 10:24am), has some doubts about throwing the likes of Colwill and Marc Guehi into such a big game.

What has Danny Mills said about Marc Guehi?

Despite barely featuring for Manchester United this season, Gareth Southgate called up Harry Maguire to his Three Lions squad, and it is a decision Mills can understand, with Colwill and Guehi both lacking experience.

Speaking about England’s centre-back situation, the former Manchester City and Leeds United player said: “If you throw Levi Colwill in or Guehi in or whoever it might be as a pair into that big game, you don’t know how they’re going to react.

“They may well thrive, they may flourish, they might freeze. And if they freeze and they make a mistake, then Gareth would be accused of, ‘Oh, you’ve put no experience players in the team.’ So it’s very, very difficult to win as England manager.”

Guehi has played for the Three Lions on just four occasions, while Colwill is yet to win a senior cap.

The Chelsea centre-back will be hoping that changes when England travel to Poland to face Ukraine, while Crystal Palace‘s 23-year-old star will be desperate to make his fifth appearance in a white shirt.

Marc Guehi deserves to play

If Guehi gets the nod over Maguire on Saturday, no one can say he does not deserve it.

Unlike the former United captain, Guehi is playing at his club right now and has been excellent for them since arriving from Chelsea in 2021.

On the ball, the Palace star is very comfortable, recording a pass success rate of 90% this season, which is the highest in the Eagles’ squad out of the players who have started at least one game (WhoScored).

And the above applies to Colwill, who has been a mainstay for Chelsea since his return from his loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion.
