Gylfi Sigurdsson has impressed at Swansea in a manner he never could at Tottenham.
It seems Tottenham Hotspur just couldn’t get the best out of Gylfi Sigurdsson.
After spending a season on loan at Swansea City, the north London side moved for him hoping he could transfer his red-hot form from Wales to the English capital.
But, two seasons later, Spurs gave up on the Sigurdsson project and let him rejoin the Swans.
Seven games into the new Premier League season, Garry Monk’s side are reaping the rewards. And an incredible statistic shows just how unlucky Tottenham were with the Icelandic midfielder.

Indeed, as Opta stats show, Sigurdsson has registered more assists this season than during his whole Spurs career!
The 25-year-old has assisted six goals so far this term in just 618 minutes of football. Last campaign, he managed none at White Hart Lane and made only four the season before that.

His tally this season easily surpasses anyone from Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham squad. Erik Lamela has three to his name in seven Premier League appearances. But no other Spurs or Swansea player has registered more than one.
Sigurdsson has also created 18 chances and scored once, although he passes less in the final third, as the more advanced Lamela, Nacer Chadli and Emmanuel Adebayor have all completed more final-third passes.
Still, Sigurdsson’s start at the Liberty Stadium has been sublime – and Tottenham fans must be ruing their luck.
It is not perhaps a case of whether they should have kept the 25-year-old – his form in north London clearly wasn’t good enough statistically – but Spurs will wonder just why they couldn’t get the best out of the Icelander when he has the talent and ability to succeed.
