Leeds United could make a brilliant short-term signing by bringing in David Nugent from Middlesbrough.

Leeds United would be making the perfect addition by signing Dave Nugent from Middlesbrough in January – but Garry Monk must ensure that the 31-year-old is a short-term purchase.

The Sun claims that Leeds are lining up a loan bid for Nugent, and the Boro man could genuinely be the man who fires the Yorkshire side to promotion.

However, if Nugent does make a positive impact at Elland Road and fire Leeds to the Premier League, there can be no room for sentimentality at the end of the season.

Middlesbrough's David Nugent shouts

Leeds should not be looking at Nugent to be the long-term solution to their search for a striker – especially if they are promoted.

Nugent will guarantee goals at Championship level. The experienced forward has found the back of the net regularly for Middlesbrough, Leicester and Portsmouth at Championship level.

However, the target man has failed to cut it at Premier League level on numerous occasions, and if Leeds are promoted they should not consider making the transfer a permanent one.

Nugent is now 31, and if he was going to make it at the top level, he would have done by now.

Middlesbrough's David Nugent before the match

The one-time England international has played 94 Premier League games in his career to date, but he has only hit the back of the net 17 times – and that should serve as a warning to Leeds.

As a short-term measure, Nugent would surely be a great addition, but if the target-man does fires Leeds up the divisions, Monk must ensure that he is ruthless and looks elsewhere to find a striker to lead the line for the Whites in the top flight.
