According to Gazette Live, Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis wanted to sign Muhamed Besic from Everton on a permanent contract in the summer transfer window before Paddy McNair was recruited from Sunderland.

Middlesbrough signed McNair from League One club Sunderland last month for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £5 million.

Besic spent the second half of last season on loan at Boro after joining the Championship club from Premier League side Everton in the January transfer window.

According to Gazette Live, Boro manager Pulis was keen on making the loan deal of the 25-year-old defensive midfielder at the start of the summer transfer window.

No move back to Middlesbrough?

The signing of McNair from Sunderland in the summer transfer window means that Middlesbrough have moved on from Besic.

The 23-year-old former Manchester United midfielder is an experienced footballer and is also versatile enough to play in defence, and Pulis does not need another defensive midfielder.

Besic – who earns £30,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com – could struggle to play regularly for Everton next season.
