Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has explained to Teesside Live why Everton-owned Muhamed Besic is not at his best yet.

Besic spent the second half of last season on loan at Middlesbrough following his move from Premier League side Everton in the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder returned to Boro on a season-long loan deal from the Toffees in the summer transfer window.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international – who earns £30,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com – has made two starts and four substitute appearances in the Championship for Middlesbrough so far this season, according to WhoScored.

Boro manager Pulis has admitted that Besic – who has been on the books of Everton since the summer of 2014 when he joined from Ferencvaros for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £4 million – is not at his best yet and has explained why.

Pulis told Teesside Live when asked why Besic has yet to hit peak form this season: “I just think he’s missed a pre-season, he’s not done a pre-season with Everton with all the stuff that was going on there. He joined us late then had two international games.

“He came back absolutely shattered and hasn’t had the opportunity to really get himself up to a level that was last year. Hopefully now he’ll get that opportunity and give us that bit more quality in midfield.”

Progressing

Besic was brilliant for Middlesbrough during the second half of last season, and it is only a matter of time before the Everton-owned defensive midfielder gets back to his best.

Boro will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Ipswich Town away from home in the Championship.
