Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka shared how he wanted to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney while his side were in the Championship, as quoted by the Teesside Gazette.
Boro host the Hornets tomorrow in what will be a vital game for Karanka’s men, who currently find themselves perilously close to the relegation zone after their poor recent run of just two points from their last five league games.

Karanka spoke to the media ahead of tomorrow’s game, and highlighted the threat that the visitors will no doubt pose his side, whilst explaining how it was two years ago when Deeney first came to his attention, as quoted by the Teesside Gazette:
“I would have liked to sign him but at the time we just didn’t have the money. Perhaps things would have been different a year or so ago, but Watford had been promoted by then. He’s a player I really like. Everybody likes Deeney because he scores goals.”
Deeney, 28, has been at Vicarage Road for six years, and has scored 93 goals in 250 league appearances for Watford.

It is his all-round contribution and willingness to help out the rest of the team, however, which makes him so valuable to his club.
The forward department must be an area of concern for Karanka, and his side’s record of just seven goals scored seven games will surely have to be improved upon if they are to push on up the table.
