West Ham United striker Jordan Hugill has told the Teesside Gazette that it has been “frustrating” watching on from the sidelines in east London, following his January move from Preston North End.

Following an impressive start to 2017-18, David Moyes decided to spend around £10million to sign the target man from Preston but he managed just three substitute appearances for the Hammers.

He has since left the London Stadium, joining Championship promotion contenders Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season with the likes of Andy Carroll, Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hugill, 26, told reporters that a hamstring injury is currently keeping him on the back burner, but is ready to show what he is capable of when fit after becoming frustrated at West Ham.

“During pre-season at West Ham I did something to my hamstring tendon and I’ve been out for a month now so it’s been a long time but I’ve been working hard so when I’m ready to go I’ll ready,” Hugill said.

“When the time’s right it’s going to be a big moment for me.

“Hopefully I can repay the faith that they’ve shown in me. It’s very frustrating but I’ve been putting a lot of hard work behind the scenes so, hopefully, when the time’s right I’ll be ready for it.”

A Boro fan, Hugill may also find it difficult to break into Tony Pulis’ side with Boro boasting many strikers. Ashley Fletcher, Martin Braithwaite and Britt Assombalonga currently battling it out for a place in the side.

Boro have begun the season in good form, securing a strong 2-2 draw away at Millwall before picking up wins against Sheffield United and Birmingham City. They edged past Notts County on penalties in the Carabao Cup.

Hugill has a contract at West Ham for another four years but the likelihood that the former Port Vale striker will see that through until the end is slimming by the second.
