Middlesbrough legend Bernie Slaven has stated on Twitter that he wants to see Grant Leadbitter play in the Championship next season with Sunderland.

Sunderland will take on Charlton Athletic at Wembley Stadium in London in the League One playoff final in a few hours’ time.

Former Middlesbrough and Republic of Ireland international forward Slaven hopes that 33-year-old midfielder Leadbitter and Sunderland win the final this afternoon and clinch a place in the Championship next season.

The former England Under-21 international was on the books of Middlesbrough from 2012 until January 2019 when he moved back to Sunderland, having started his professional club football career at the Black Cats.

Sunderland have one of the best and strongest squads in League One, and Jack Ross’s side will be favourites against Charlton.

Not many will have expected the Addicks to come this far in the League One, and perhaps their underdog status will enable them to be at their best and will help them get the better of Sunderland.
