The Boro goalkeeper has gone on an emergency loan to the League One strugglers.

Middlesbrough have confirmed that goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has had his emergency loan with Rochdale extended by a further week, as per a statement on the Championship club’s official website.
The 35-year old, currently third choice at the Riverside Stadium, joined the League One strugglers last week under the EFL’s seven-day emergency loan deal, following an injury to Josh Lillis.
Lonergan joined Boro as a free agent in the summer, having last played for Leeds United before being released, and is currently third choice at the Riverside Stadium behind number one Darren Randolph and veteran Dimitrios Konstantopoulos.
He made two appearances for the Teessiders, both in the Carabao Cup as he played in the first and second rounds, against Notts County and Rochdale, before being replaced by Konstantopoulos in the next two rounds and by Randolph in the quarter-final loss to Burton.
Lonergan joined Lillis and Brad Wade as the third goalkeeper at Spotland and made his debut in last weekend’s League One fixture over Coventry City, the Sky Blues running out 1-0 winners over Dale.
In a statement by the League One club, manager Keith Hill predicted that Lillis would be out for another two or three weeks.

Here is how some Middlesbrough fans reacted to the news – some suggested emergency loans of their own:
