Rhodes’ move from Middlesbrough to Sheffield Wednesday was finally confirmed 14 hours after the deadline passed.

Sheffield Wednesday finally have their man, ending one of the most protracted transfer sagas in club history.

Jordan Rhodes’ move very nearly didn’t happen, with news of Wednesday’s bid for the former Middlesbrough striker not surfacing until tea time on deadline day and the relevant documents not sent until minutes before the 11pm cut-off.

In fact, so late in the day were the two clubs’ submissions that the Football League had to meet the following morning to sanction the deal – an initial loan which will become permanent in the summer.

It is only a year to the day since Rhodes arrived at Middlesbrough, for whom he scored six goals from 13 starts to take the Teessiders into the Premier League.

Once there, however, the 26-year-old was used on only six occasions, and found his chances of regular football diminished by the recent arrivals of Rudy Gestede and Patrick Bamford.

But in the eyes of many Boro supporters, their loss is Sheffield Wednesday’s gain…

Should Middlesbrough have kept hold of Rhodes?
