Former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka has emerged as the early favourite for the vacant Sunderland job.

Karanka is a familiar figure in the North East after guiding Middlesbrough to promotion from the Championship in 2015/16.
His Premier League season did not work out as successfully, but Sunderland cannot be too picky right now.
Sunderland sit in the Championship relegation zone and fear a second successive relegation.
Middlesbrough have since appointed former Leeds manager Garry Monk, and while they are performing below pre-season expectations, they sit just outside the play-offs in seventh position.
There remains some fondness towards the Spaniard on Teesside, and fans are hoping he does not ruin this by taking over at their rivals.
