Middlesbrough have announced an initiative ahead of their Championship game against Norwich City at the end of March in which fans have the chance to vote to rename the Riverside Stadium for that one fixture.

In partnership with Enjoy Tees Valley, Boro’s statement says they are planning to showcase their pride in their region with the one-off name change in tribute to Teesside’s “most famous son”, Captain James Cook.

The club have offered four possible name options for supporters to choose from: Captain James Cook Stadium, Endeavour Stadium, Discovery Stadium and Resolution Stadium, the latter three references to the names of three of his most renowned ships.

Deadline for voting is Friday 15 March at 5pm and the stadium name will be announced on Sunday, Boro added.

Some Middlesbrough fans, however, aren’t best pleased with the announcement and the voting options, claiming that there are other figures in the club and region’s history worthy of recognition.

Here is how some Boro supporters reacted on Twitter, with several of these offering their own ideas instead:

Up next for Boro, fifth in the Championship, is Wednesday night’s home game against Preston North End, while Saturday will see Tony Pulis’s side head to Aston Villa.
