The 19-year-old Boro starlet is currently out on loan at Championship side Rotherham United.

Middlesbrough academy graduate Dael Fry was handed the opportunity of a lifetime after Gareth Southgate invited the 19-year-old defender to train with the England senior squad following some eye-catching training performances with the U-20 team at St.George’s Park.

The Gazette Live report that the highly-rated Boro youngster was drafted in to the Three Lion’s first-team sessions to cover for several senior players who were sitting out due to injury precautions.

Fry was left out of England U-20s squad for their game against the Netherlands on Wednesday night due to his involvement with the senior side, however the 19-year-old is not expected to feature for Gareth Southgate’s men when they take on Malta in a World Cup qualifying encounter at Wembley this Saturday.

The opportunity to train with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge caps a remarkable 18-months for Fry, who made his full Middlesbrough debut in August of last year aged just 17, before going on to make seven first-team appearances for the Teesiders over the course of their successful Championship promotion campaign.

The talented young defender signed a new five-year deal with Middlesbrough in the summer, tying him down until 2021, before joining Rotherham United on loan; with The Championship side beating off a number of rival clubs to his signature.

Following the news of Fry’s 12-month loan switch to the New York Stadium, Millers’ manager Alan Stubbs spoke of his delight at securing the services of such a highly-regarded young talent:

“We are delighted to get him in, he is a young defender with huge potential and he is someone that Middlesbrough think very highly of.” Stubbs told Rotherham United’s official club website.

“He has very good attributes for a defender and has a very bright future ahead of him. I’m sure his performances will show that. I am really looking forward to working with him, and seeing him play in a Rotherham shirt. This is the next step in his development in order for him to play in the Premier League.”

Fry has made six league appearances for Rotherham so far this season, although the Boro local has endured a baptism of fire for his new club, with The Millers’ currently rooted to the bottom of The Championship table after just one win from their opening 11 games.
