Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka believes Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil can be as good as he wants and feels the player could be a potential Ballon d’Or winner, The Telegraph report.

The German international knows Karanka well after the two worked together during Ozil’s three-year stay at Real Madrid, and he displayed his qualities there by setting La Liga assist records.

Since joining Arsenal it seems he has taken his game further, and Ozil this season has added those elusive goals to his repertoire with an impressive record of six strikes in eight matches to date.

There really isn’t much the German playmaker can’t do with the ball these days, and as such Boro boss Karanka believes he has all the attributes needed to become a potential Ballon d’Or winner.

“I had three years with him. He can be as good as he wants. He is an amazing player. Arsenal have a different style but now he is showing how good he is. He could be a potential [Ballon d’Or] winner along with Ronaldo and Messi,” The Boro boss told The Telegraph.

Ozil set a club record for the amount of Premier League assists posted last season, and in midweek he managed to score his first career hat-trick during the 6-0 win over Bulgarian champions Ludogorets.

There are still question marks over the player’s consistency, yet with time on his side he still has the potential to take his game further and add some much-needed silverware to his name.

Ozil featured against Karanka’s Boro on Saturday but was largely frustrated, with the game ending 0-0.
