Former Newcastle United player turned football pundit Micky Quinn wrote in his column for The Chronicle that it is a “real pleasure” to watch the team playing so well and getting positive results.

Newcastle United are currently fourth in the Premier League table, and while the Magpies are not expected to mount a top-four challenge, Quinn believes that with Rafael Benitez at helm, anything is possible.

He believes that Newcastle have achieved that position on merit, and that the Magpies are playing “some really entertaining stuff”.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez reacts during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Stoke City at St. James Park on September 16, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for the Magpies after they lost their opening two games against Tottenham Hotspur and Huddersfield Town.

They have now won three Premier League games on the trot, with matches against West Ham United, Swansea City and Stoke City.

Quinn said that all the credit should go to Benitez, and hailed him as a world class manager.

At the same time, he added that every Newcastle player who are involved in the matchday squad are improving all the time.

He has especially praised four Newcaste players for the turnaround – Matt Ritchie, Jamaal Lascelles, Christian Atsu, and Mikel Merino.

On Merino, Quinn added that the 21-year-old could be a real star in the Premier League.

“We know Rafa is a world-class manager, and he is using all of those coaching skills to make this United side one of the most organised in the whole of the Premier League,” wrote Quinn for The Chronicle.

“Matt Ritchie is a quality player and he is pulling the strings for Newcastle. Then you have Jamaal Lascelles, who we have written about in this column before, and he keeps getting better by the week.

“Christian Atsu is looking sharper too, and Mikel Merino looks like he could be a real star in the Premier League.”
