Micky Quinn hits back at Rio Ferdinand for his comments on Newcastle

Rio Ferdinand defended Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley following their defeat at Chelsea.

Micky Quinn has told Rio Ferdinand not to talk about Newcastle if he doesn’t really know the ins and outs of the club following his comments about owner Mike Ashley.

Speaking to BT Sport, the former Manchester United defender claimed that the Toon Army supporters should be thanking their owner for spending £50m of his ‘own money’ when they were in the Championship.

In 2016, the Magpies were relegated to the second tier of English football but they bounced straight back up under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez, who had just taken charge months before.

During that summer, Newcastle sold the likes of Gini Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko and Andros Townsend for vasts amounts of money which was then used to purchase the likes of Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie.

Given Ferdinand’s comments were backed up with either a lack of knowledge or research, former Premier League striker Quinn had a simple message for the BT Sport pundit.

“You cannot really comment if you don’t know what is going on from the outside in regards of what is happening on the inside,” Quinn told the Alan Brazil Breakfast show on talkSPORT on 14/01/201 at 9:40 am.

“The thing is when Rio is commenting, he was on the defensive all the time, ‘it’s his club, it’s his club’. It is Mike Ashley’s club and he can do what he wants. But just say there is no investment, there’s no money and I want to get out as soon as possible.

“The reason why no-one has brought Newcastle is because he has made it so difficult for people to buy it and I know that for a fact… and when people, pundits and players are passing comment when they don’t really know what they are talking about that’s what frustrates the Newcastle fans.”

At the start of December, retail businessman Ashley told Sky News that he wants to sell the north-east club before the January transfer window.

The winter window is now open and no sale or purchase from an investor has been made yet as the club sit into the bottom three of the Premier League table.
