Newcastle United have signed Stoke City forward Joselu in a £5 million deal.
Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Joselu who joined the club from Stoke City.
The player had already agreed personal terms and had completed his medical ahead of the move. According to reports from Sky Sports, the Magpies have secured his signing for a transfer fee in the region of £5 million.
The 27-year-old striker joined Stoke City in 2015 for £5.75 million from Hannover, but scored only four goals in 27 appearances.
Rafael Benitez has been vocal in recent weeks over the lack of transfer business, and Joselu’s arrival would come as a welcome boost for the club.
However, former Newcastle United player and football pundit, Micky Quinn says it is “difficult to get too excited” about the signing.
He says that Newcastle needed marquee signings this summer, but the reality is the Magpies won’t be spending £20 million on a single player anytime soon.
Quinn says Benitez is therefore forced to make a bargain signing for a player who couldn’t get a game for Stoke City.
The football pundit says that if he turns out to be a Premier League goalscorer who can get into double figures, then he would represent one of Newcastle’s best deals in recent years.
“It’s difficult to get too excited about the signing of Joselu from Stoke – even if a transfer breakthrough is a welcome development at Newcastle,” wrote Quinn for The Chronicle.
“That does not mean it’s not potentially a good signing. His record in Germany wasn’t too bad and he’s got ability, which is why Rafa Benitez is going for him. He knows him from his Real Madrid days and Benitez has an eye for a talent, so that’s a positive.
“What I mean about not getting too excited is that we have to be realistic. You don’t get much for £5million and if he turns out to be a Premier League goalscorer who can get double figures this season, it will be one of Newcastle’s best deals in recent years. That sort of money doesn’t even buy you a striker from the Championship these days.
“I’ve not seen much of Joselu but I hear he’s got the raw ability to be a good player, it just hasn’t worked out at Stoke for whatever reason. And that does happen sometimes – a player goes somewhere else, gets a fresh lease of life and starts scoring goals or playing well.”
