Football pundit Micky Quinn has delivered a damning verdict on Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane’s England captaincy credentials.
Spurs and England’s Harry Kane
Kane, 23, was given the captain’s armband for the Three Lions in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Scotland, a game in which he scored a late equaliser.
And Gareth Southgate has announced the Premier League’s top scorer will keep the armband for the season-ending friendly in France tonight where the team bowed out of Euro 2016 in embarrassing fashion to international minnows Iceland.
“I am not committing to a timescale on that,” Southgate said when asked how close he is to naming a permanent captain.
“I think it has been a good experience to develop other leaders. There’s lots of potential leaders in different ways – some are at the forefront, speak first, lead from the front in different ways.
“Others more thoughtful, take responsibility on the ball, show leadership in other ways. Everybody’s different.”
But talkSPORT pundit Micky Quinn, himself a top striker with a fearsome goal record of 229 in 524 career matches, says Kane should not be England skipper.

“He’s the wrong choice,” Quinn said on talkSPORT.
“I want my captain to be inspirational, I want my captain to set an example, I want my captain to be vocal.
“And he’s none of that. He is a top class goalscorer Harry Kane, who I admire, I really do, but he’s not a captain.
“I was looking for leaders, I was looking for captains in that second half against Scotland and do you know what it reminded me of? The Iceland game.
“I want a proper leader as captain of England.”
England manager Gareth Southgate speaks with Harry Kane
The decision to name Kane as captain for the two games comes after Southgate took his squad for a surprise and intense army training camp on meeting up last week.
The team building exercise focused on coming up with solutions as a unit through adverse conditions.
So perhaps Southgate saw something in Kane during that experience which influenced his decision.
And being the country’s leading striker proved inspirational for Alan Shearer’s England teammates when he was captain.
