Micky Hazard fumed on Twitter after VAR opted against giving Tottenham a penalty during their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle’s new signing Joelinton opened the scoring for the away side in the first half when Christian Atsu’s dinked ball saw the Brazilian slot home for his first goal for the club.

In the second half, Steve Bruce’s side dropped deeper, with Harry Kane calling for a penalty after an alleged foul by Jamaal Lascelles, but VAR decided to stay with Mike Dean’s on-field decision in not awarding a penalty.

It is a moment that has caused controversy and a huge talking point, with former Spurs man Hazard expressing his anger at VAR’s decision, as posted on his personal Twitter account.

Tottenham went into this game with four points from their opening two matches, whilst Bruce’s side had suffered two defeats and questions were being asked of his management.

The Magpies were well-beaten at Norwich City last Saturday, but the Newcastle players provided a perfect answer as they produced a brilliant defensive display.

It will ease the pressure on Bruce, who walked into the St James’ Park post in the summer, with supporters against his appointment.

As for Pochettino, he will be slightly worried by Tottenham’s performances because they could have suffered a similar type of defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day and they were lucky to get a point against Manchester City last Saturday.
