Micky Hazard has played down Dele Alli’s performances for Tottenham Hotspur and insisted that there is nothing more to his woes than a simple bad run of form.
The 21-year-old has been heavily criticised over his performances in recent weeks and months.
His display in Spurs’ 4-1 defeat at Manchester City offered another reminder that the England star is nowhere near to replicating the standard he has set in recent years.
The former MK Dons starlet parted ways with his management team earlier this season and he is yet to hire a new agent, amid speculation linking him with the in-demand Jorge Mendes.
Those off-the-field issues have been cited as a potential factor in his nosediving form, but Tottenham legend Hazard is confident that he’ll be back to his best before long, when asked if there was something “not quite right” with the star.
Form is temporary and class is permanent as they say, but the Tottenham star can’t hide behind expressions forever. He simply has to start performing to the level he is capable of or there is serious repercussions for him and Spurs.
Unless he improves, and does on a consistent basis, then it gives England boss Gareth Southgate a serious question to ask when it comes time to picking his World Cup squad. If Alli can’t help Spurs at Wembley then how will he help the Three Lions in Russia?
Of course, there is the expectation that he will be recovered from whatever is hindering him at the moment, be it mental or physical, but the longer this slump continues, the harder it is to escape from.
