Newcastle United are currently leading the way in the Championship table.

Arsenal's Theo Walcott

Micky Gray has told the Jim White Show, which was broadcast on 21st February on TalkSPORT, that Newcastle United should be looking to sign players like Arsenal’s Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain if they are promoted.

Newcastle appear to be in a strong position to return to the Premier League, and currently lead the way in the Championship.

Rafael Benitez’s side have built up a healthy cushion inside the automatic promotion spaces.

But Gray believes that Newcastle need to invest, if they are to compete back in the top tier of English football.

It was put to Gray that Arsenal duo Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain could be potential targets, and the former Sunderland man agreed that they would both be good additions.

“They do like their wide players,” Gray said. “They’ve certainly had some very talented wide players over the years.

“And with Newcastle coming up, it’s a stadium that has found it difficult over the years to attract players. But if they are to get back to where they belong then these are the type of players that they have to look for.”

What Newcastle’s plan in the summer transfer will be remains to be seen, as Rafael Benitez was frustrated with his side’s lack of activity in January.

Newcastle were expected to be active last month, with a number of players targeted by Benitez.

However, Newcastle did not make a signing over January, and the Spanish boss was clearly left frustrated.

Whether either of Walcott or Oxlade-Chamberlain will be available this summer remains to be seen, as they have both played fairly regularly for Arsenal this season.
