Sunderland were hammered 5-2 at Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

Simon Grayson, Manager of Sunderland looks on prior to the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Everton and Sunderland at Goodison Park on September 20, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Sunderland’s miserable Championship form continued on Tuesday night, as they were thrashed 5-2 away at Ipswich Town to heap the pressure on manager Simon Grayson.

The Black Cats lost 2-1 at home to Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon, and manager Grayson didn’t fare any better when he took his side to Portman Road on Tuesday night.

Ex-Sunderland striker Martyn Waghorn scored against his former club to make it 1-0, and whilst Billy Jones equalised just moments later, Ipswich went into half time leading 2-1 thanks to Jordan Spence’s goal.

Bersant Celina and David McGoldrick added goals to make it 4-1, and even after Aiden McGeady pulled one back to Sunderland, Grant Ward added a fifth to compound Sunderland’s misery.

It’s now six defeats in seven games and just two points from a possible 24, leaving Sunderland in the Championship relegation zone, and the pressure is already mounting on Grayson.

The last place he will want to go is Preston North End, the club he left over the summer to take over at Sunderland, but that’s exactly who he faces this weekend in what could be a pivotal game for the Black Cats boss.

However, ex-Sunderland left back and current pundit Mickey Gray has offered his view, and seemed to suggest that the man who should be leaving is chairman Ellis Short, having suggested that he feels sorry for Grayson having only been given £1.5million to spend on new signings.

Gray pleaded for one man – assumed to be Short given his support of Grayson – to leave the club imminently and hand the reins over to somebody who can take the club forward again.
