Mick Schumacher has described Road America as a “unique” challenge as he prepares for his first IndyCar weekend at the historic Wisconsin circuit.
The former Formula 1 driver got his first proper look at the 4.014-mile road course during an IndyCar test on June 9. While Schumacher has raced at some of the world’s most famous tracks, he said Road America stood out as something different from anything he’s seen so far this season.
With limited testing time in IndyCar, the session was an important chance to get up to speed before the XPEL Grand Prix. It also gave Schumacher a first taste of one of North America’s most celebrated circuits.

Mick Schumacher impressed by Road America’s distinctive character
Road America is often compared to classic European venues thanks to its length, high-speed corners and natural setting. However, Schumacher said the circuit has its own identity despite his experience racing at many famous tracks around the world.
The German explained that he was reluctant to compare Road America directly with any other venue. Instead, he believes the track offers a driving experience that is unique in its own right.
“It’s a very unique track. I think it would be unfair to take too much comparison to other tracks because every track is unique and very special. So is this one. It’s great to experience it,” Schumacher said.
Schumacher arrived at the test without many expectations about the circuit. Although teammates Graham Rahal and Louis Foster provided some insight beforehand, he preferred to discover the track for himself once he got behind the wheel.
Elevation changes left a lasting impression
After his first laps around the circuit, Schumacher quickly identified one feature that stood out above everything else. The constant elevation changes immediately caught his attention as he worked through the fast and flowing layout.
He also praised the setting of the circuit, which winds through Wisconsin woodland and features several visually striking sections. Schumacher pointed to the run toward Canada Corner as one of the most memorable parts of the lap.
“I guess the undulation, like, how much goes up and down. It’s beautiful driving through the woods, down on the back straight, going to Canada Corner. It’s very nice scenery to race here. The track’s getting better, and it’ll be good to have this afternoon to hopefully have something representable of what the race might be.”
Schumacher knows every lap counts in IndyCar, where testing opportunities are limited. With his first Road America experience now behind him, he will hope the lessons learned during the test translate into a strong performance when the series returns later this month.
