Newcastle United are already among the bookies’ favourites to sign Watford’s Troy Deeney.

Mick Quinn wants Newcastle United to sign a proven Premier League goalscorer… such as Watford captain Troy Deeney.

Quinn – a former Newcastle number 9 – believes his old side are definitely after a new striker, but doesn’t think they can afford the wages of Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe, who looks to be Bournemouth-bound on £130,000 a week.

And with only £50-60 million to spend – so the Liverpudlian understands – Rafa Benitez may have to wheel and deal this summer, starting with one player in particular.

“I think [Aleksandar] Mitrovic has got to go, myself, I think they’ve got to cash in on him, cash in on a few other players,” Quinn told Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on Talksport.

“Remember last season they had [Moussa] Sissoko and [Georginio] Wijnaldum to cash in on? Well they haven’t got that this season. They’re going to be wheeling and dealing for £3-4 million players to cash in on, to add to the money to give Rafa.”

On Newcastle’s striker search, he added: “[Could they sign] someone like a Troy Deeney, someone who’s proven in the Premier League, or a [Kelechi] Iheanacho, a young striker who’s scored goals in the Premier League but is [not] getting a a first team place?”

And Quinn – who has repeatedly championed Iheanacho’s name – could be in luck where Deeney is concerned, after The Daily Mail reported the 28-year-old is ready for a fresh challenge.

However, the report also states that Watford will demand £35 million for Deeney, who scored 10 goals and created four in 37 top flight outings this past campaign.

The Chronicle reports Newcastle are already considering a loan move for Iheanacho, the 20-year-old Manchester City player.
