Newcastle United thumped the Lilywhites 6-0 at St James’s Park.

Newcastle United moved into the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a 6-0 thrashing of Preston North End on Tuesday night.

The Magpies welcomed Preston to St James’s Park and progressed into the last eight of the competition with a hugely-impressive victory.

Goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mohamed Diame, either side of Alan Browne’s 25th-minute red card, helped Newcastle into a comfortable 2-0 half-time lead.

The floodgates opened after the break as Matt Ritchie added a third from the penalty spot, before Diame and Mitrovic completed their braces before the game was out.

And there was still time for Ayoze Perez – who himself scored twice in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Reading – to add a sixth in stoppage time as Rafael Benitez’s side continue to impress.

And ex-Newcastle man Mick Quinn has reacted to the rout with delight on Twitter.

It is no surprise that Newcastle are top of the Championship and even though this came in the League Cup, it did come against a Championship side and England’s second tier should be worried about United – as if they weren’t already.
