Newcastle United picked up a controversial 1-0 win over Burton Albion on Wednesday evening.
Referee Keith Stroud rules out Matt Ritchie of Newcastle United’s penalty
Former Newcastle striker Mick Quinn has taken to Twitter to offer his reaction to the Magpies’ controversial 1-0 home win over Burton Albion.
The Magpies were in action at St. James’ Park again on Wednesday evening, as just days after beating Wigan Athletic 2-1, they took on Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion in a game dominated by one key decision.
At 0-0, Newcastle were awarded a penalty when Dwight Gayle was adjudged to have been fouled, and Matt Ritchie stepped up to slot the penalty into the corner of the net.
However, referee Keith Stroud bizarrely disallowed the goal – seemingly for encroachment – and strangely gave a free kick to Burton, when he should have actually ordered for Ritchie to re-take his spot kick.
Stroud was unsurprisingly booed by the Newcastle fans and berated by Magpies boss Rafael Benitez for a remarkable mistake, but the Magpies did go on to win the game.
After the likes of Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey had gone close in the second half, Ritchie picked the ball up on the left hand side and drove infield, before bending a superb right-footed strike into the corner of the net.

The result takes Newcastle back to the top of the Championship table, and they remain on course for a return to the Premier League despite Stroud’s bizarre refereeing decision against Burton Albion.
After the final whistle, former Magpies striker Mick Quinn took to Twitter to celebrate the win, whilst joking that referee Stroud must be a Sunderland fan to have ruled out Ritchie’s penalty.
