Newcastle United legend Mick Quinn has claimed in his Evening Chronicle column that Toon fans must simply forget about Aleksander Mitrovic despite his red-hot form for Championship side Fulham.

The 23-year-old striker has scored two goals in a week after finding the back of the net in a 1-1 draw against play-off hopefuls Bristol City, before scoring against league leaders Wolves in an excellent 1-0 win on Saturday.

The Serbia international joined fellow countryman and manager Slavisa Jokanovic in January on loan, after a deadline-day debacle that saw him almost rejoin former side Anderlecht before moving to west London.

His form has been noticed by Toon fans but Quinn has urged the St. James’ Park fanbase to forget about Mitrovic, before stating Mitrovic could still return to have a future on Tyneside.

“I saw some fans over the weekend talking about Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring twice inside a week for Fulham,” Quinn said.

“But you just have to forget about him for now. He may come back in the future, but at the moment he isn’t a Newcastle player – so let’s not waste time and energy talking about him.

“He can’t impact on Newcastle’s season now, and clearly he didn’t fit into what Rafa is trying to do.”

Mitrovic was allowed to leave on loan after the Toon finally ended their hunt for a striker in the form of Leicester City target man Islam Slimani, who has joined the club on loan until the end of the season.

However, the Algeria international is yet to make his debut for the Tyneside outfit, as a groin problem continues to prevent him from pulling on the black and white stripes for the first time.

Newcastle are next in action on Saturday as they travel to Anfield to face Rafa Benitez’s former side Liverpool in an evening kick-off, as they look to go one better following their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last time out.
