Mick Quinn: Carver needs an ‘unbelievable’ run – but I’m not confident

The former Newcastle United striker has been running the rule over the current Magpies boss.

Former Newcastle striker Mick Quinn remains entirely unconvinced by John Carver – and says he needs an ‘unbelievable’ run to realistically win enough approval to get the United job full-time, according to his regular column in the Chronicle.

Carver, 50, has underwhelmed since succeeding Alan Pardew at St James’ Park, although he has been given the job until the end of the current season.

Quinn, like many, feels Carver has been chosen because he is a ‘cheap’ option. But the former Newcastle man has no objections to him being given a chance to prove himself.

He is yet to prove himself, however, and Quinn feels only a phenomenal run of results will change that.

“The problem is that nothing I have seen since Christmas has given me any faith that John is the man to take Newcastle forward,” he said.

“He would have to go on an unbelievable run from now until the end of the season to win me round, probably starting with winning at least two of the next three. When you look at the next three fixtures, I’m not confident.”

Next up for the Magpies – one of the three dreaded fixtures Quinn refers to – is a trip to Everton.

Arsenal visit Tyneside the following week, as things get no easier, before Newcastle then travel to Sunderland for the Tyne-Wear derby – a fixture Carver’s predecessor had very little luck in during his time at St James’ Park.

Newcastle currently sit 11th in the Premier League, four points off 10th-placed West Ham and five clear of 12th-placed Crystal Palace (managed by Pardew).
