Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford is eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland.
According to Extra Time, Bamford was contacted first by Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane in March 2018 regarding playing for the Republic of Ireland.
McCarthy contacted the former Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough forward at the beginning of 2019, according to the report.
McCarthy has said that for Bamford to play for the Republic of Ireland, the 25-year-old will have to contact him.
McCarthy told Extra Time: “I think Patrick has to give me a call if he wants to… I think that’s the way it works now, bearing in mind all the conversation I’ve had with him. I left it with him (Bamford), if he feels ready that he wants to come and do it, then give me a call.”
Good forward
Bamford is a very good forward who can get better in the coming years, and he will be an asset for the Republic of Ireland national football team.
The 25-year-old had injury issues this season, but the forward still managed to score a fair few goals and did look good when he was fit and available.
According to WhoScored, the former Chelsea forward made 16 starts and seven substitute appearances in the Championship for Leeds this season, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in the process.
Bamford joined Leeds from Championship rivals Middlesbrough in the summer of 2018 for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £7 million.
