Mick McCarthy has told BeIN Sports that he reckons Wolverhampton Wanderers will finish in the top 10 of the Premier League despite only gaining promotion to England’s top tier last season.

Wolves have begun the season in excellent fashion despite Saturday evening’s narrow 3-2 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux, sitting in eleventh place after 11 games.

Managing Wolves for just under six years between 2006 and 2012, McCarthy took to the dugout 270 times in all competitions and masterminded the club’s promotion in 2008-09 to the Premier League.

He spoke enviously of the riches current boss Nuno Espirito Santo has at his disposal – something he did not possess during his time at Wolves. But he reckons the Portuguese has spent them wisely, and will guide Wolves to the top 10.

“I had a great time there, it was five and a half years,” McCarthy said. “We just didn’t invest when we were in the Premier League. Nuno had millions to spend in the Championship, and had far and away the best team in the Championship.

“He’s got a good system, a good way of playing football and I’ve tipped them to finish in the top 10. I think they’re a really good side.”

Wolves were unlucky not to produce a marvellous comeback against Spurs, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side going 3-0 up at Molineux on Saturday. Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane all got their names on the score sheet.

But defender Juan Foyth gave away two penalties, which saw Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez score, setting up a nervy end to the match for Spurs. But it was the north Londoners who won all three points.
