Lee Cattermole has been on the books of Sunderland since the summer of 2009 when he joined from Wigan for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £6 million.

Over the years, the defensive midfielder has established himself as an important player for Sunderland and is still a very good footballer.

With the Black Cats playing in League One this season, there are doubts over the future of the former England Under-21 international.

Uncertain future

A report in The Guardian earlier this week claimed that French club Bordeaux are in talks with Sunderland over the transfer of Cattermole.

It was reported that the Black Cats are open to parting company with the former Middlesbrough defensive midfielder, who is claimed to be earning £40,000 per week as salary at the moment.

Former Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy has spoken highly of Cattermole and has praised his commitment on the football pitch, and perhaps it would be better for Jack Ross’s side to keep hold of him instead of selling him in the summer transfer window or sending him out on loan.

McCarthy said on Sky Sports Main Event on Thursday evening (7:36pm, August 16, 2018) about Cattermole in the build-up to the Carabao Cup tie between Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday at the Stadium of Light: “I think he has been that kind of player forever. He has always wanted to go out and committed himself to the club. He has put an effort in every single week.”

Sunderland stay

As McCarthy’s aforementioned comments underline, Cattermole is a very committed and focused footballer who gives his all on the football pitch, and Sunderland will have a better chance of getting promoted to the Championship with the midfielder in the team.
